[ Internet ] [ System Utilities] [ Fun- i dont have fun]

Note: these are all programs for windows operating system. If you need a program for linux then just go to www.freshmeat.net and search for whatever you want.

Also Note: Most all these programs are available for Free (or a donation if you have means and are impressed with them).

Office Suite

Open Office is a great replacement for microsoft office.

Internet

Web/Internet Browser

Mozilla or Firebird

Don't use Internet Explorer. It's crap. It causes all sorts of problems. It ignores a huge number of things that were once or could be good about the web. Not to mention windows viruses can be spread by windows

Use mozilla or Firebird, they are FREE and GREAT pieces of software. If you need ANY help at all using them or switching, I will help you as much as possible with undying patience.

Email

Mozilla or Thunderbird

Again; MS makes crappy products. When you hear on the news that $10 million was lost because of an internet virus - it's because Outlook was caught pantless again. There is a security breech for microsoft about once every 2 months for years.

Mozilla is a full internet suite which has a cool email client. If you need any help, ask me, and I'll glady help you become cooler then you were.

FTP

FTP = File Transfer Protocol (or something).

It's for transfering large amounts of data. Dopes use email to transfer large amounts of data, which slows everyone down, and increases the file size some 30%.

I use FileZilla it's a great ftp client that also allows for SSH-like SCP and SFTP. Ask me if you want to know what that is.

FileZilla also has a ftp-server for windows that I was able setup more then onve very easily.

Secure Shell
or
Telnet

Putty [ homepage ]

This is the greatest little thing that ever came about. It does telnet or secure shell, and has all the options that one might need. It is a windows program that performs like a linux program. And what that means is that is "does just what it should well"

System Utilities

Disk Usage

JDiskReport is a tool that I've only recently found, and it's really handy. Specially when you're trying to figure out how you've gone and filled up another 250GB drive with home videos

Virus Combatant

Spybot Search and Destroy [ homepage ]

Spybot is this great program that runs through your registry and finds all the programs that are corrupting or outright spying on your system. Install it, run it, and be surprised at how many aweful things were installed on your helpless little machine without you knowing it.

VNC

Remote Controlling

Virtual Network Computing [ homepage ]

This application lets you remotely control a computer. It's totally neat to watch someone else move your cursor around (for the first minute).

Network monitoring
